September Word Bump

September's Favorite Game

Play it all year long! 

Here is a game board for the words that were reviewed during the first week of school.

Before playing, label a die with the six featured sight words.  I like to use a tissue box.  I peel and stick the featured word cards for each week.

Sometimes, I print the words directly on a small, wooden cube.  

This game can be played in partners or groups of three if necessary.  Give each group a game board, a die labeled with the featured words, and different colored bingo chips for each student in the group.

To play, a student rolls the word die and reads the word.  If the word rolled is not covered, he places his chip on the word.  If the rolled word is covered with another player's chip, he may “bump” the other student’s chip off the board.  If the word that he rolled is covered with his own chip, he may roll again.  The first student to cover the board wins.

Color Word Bump Game

Here is a bump game for Color Words!

 Before playing, place the colored crayons in a brown paper bag or small box.

This game can be played in partners or groups of three.  Give each pair of students a game board, a bag of the colored crayons, and bingo chips of different colors for each student in the group.  Remember to model the game in whole group before playing with a partner.

  I like to use colored bingo chips as game markers because the students can see through the chips.  Unifix cubes work well too!  

To play the game, a student reaches in the paper bag and pulls out one crayon.  The student names the color of the chosen crayon and places his colored bingo chip on the color word.  (For beginning readers, encourage those students to check and read the color word on the side of the crayon.)  If the color word is not covered on the game board, the student places his chip on the word.  If the color word is covered with the other player's chips, he may “bump” the other student’s chip off the board.  If the color word is covered with the student's own bingo chip, he may return the crayon to the bag and pick again.  The first student to cover the board with all of his colored chips wins. Play as time allows.  Add this game to the working with words station.

Grab Your Leprechaun Hat!

Due to student request, 

we are again going to grab our "hats" to practice reading sight words!

This time it'll be a St. Patrick's Day hat!

Here's the pdf of 100 sight words, leprechaun cards, and pots of gold!

To play, students take turns pulling a word card from the hat.  If the student reads the word card correctly, he keeps the card in his known words collection.  If the student pulls a "tricky leprechaun card", he gets to plays a trick on another reader in the group.  He  is allowed to "steal" a word card from another person's collection of known words.  If the "stolen" card is read correctly, he may keep the leprechaun card and the "stolen" card and add these cards to his known words collection.  If the "pot of gold" card is pulled from the hat, everyone must give all of their known cards to the lucky student!  

Play continues until a rainbow card is drawn!

A Game To Reinforce Sight Word Recognition

Print the game cards and grab a hat!

Students take turns drawing a sight word card from the hat.

If the student can read the word card correctly, he/she keeps the card.

Students continue taking turns.

(If the word card drawn is unknown, place it in a discard pile to review at the end of the game.)

If a "Thing One and Thing Two" card is drawn, the student returns all of his/her word cards to the hat.

(The "Thing One and Thing Two" card is placed in a separate pile and does not need to be returned to the hat.)

Play continues as time allows or until the hat is empty!

I've provided a pdf of 100 sight words and 24 "Thing One and Thing Two" cards.  Include as many or as few of the cards as appropriate for your group of students.  This version of the game "Bang" reinforces sight word recognition during our week of Dr. Seuss Fun!
