Here's A Look At Just One of Our Reading Responses From This Past Week!

We Read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.

After reading The Grouchy Ladybug, we wrote about what makes us grouchy and why.  If you are in need of a smile, click on the photos below to enlarge the students' writings and read their responses.

Here's a simple art project that will keep your little "bugs" busy as bees!

Use an 8.5 in. x 11 in. piece of red construction paper for the body.  Demonstrate how to round the edges of the red paper.  Use an 8.5 in x 5.5 in. piece of black construction paper for the head.  Demonstrate how to round the edges of the black paper.  Glue the head on to the red paper.  To make the antennae, the children tucked two small pieces of black pipe cleaners behind the head.  Use another 8.5 in x 5.5 in. piece of black construction paper for the spots and the legs.  Attach google eyes with glue.  Add a "glitter glue" smile and let dry!

Fishing For Facts

Time to Review

"Let's Go Fishing" reviews basic addition and subtraction facts.

Materials

"Fishing For Facts" game board ~ one per student

Math Flash Cards

2-sided counters

Directions

To take a turn, a player chooses a math flash card.  He either adds or subtracts the number sentence.  If the answer given is correct, he covers a fish on the “Fishing for Facts” math game board and the turn is over.  If the answer given is incorrect, he does not cover a fish and the turn is over.  Players take turns until time is up or until one player marks all his fish.  The player who marks all fish wins.

We love to write our own poems!

Here's the framework we used to write our poems.

Butterflies

Flutter by the (insert adjective), (insert noun).

Flutter by the (insert adjective), (insert noun).

Flutter by the (insert adjective), (insert noun).

Flutter by, my butterfly!

I used sentence strips in a pocket chart to model the poem with the students.

(Sorry, I did not take a photo.)

I also had a few pre-made word cards for the adjectives and nouns.

I modeled the poem using the pre-made word cards.  Then the students provided their own ideas written on post-it notes.  The post-it notes allowed for ease of repeated student interaction.  

(You could easily transfer this group lesson to a small group station activity.)

Grab the watercolors and paper plates!

Students cut out a "v" at the top and bottom of the paper plate.

Students paint their watercolor designs.

Allow to dry and add the body.

Fun, quick, and beautiful!

We spent the end of last week reading books about Mother's Day!
